Dramatic Arts Grade 9 (Open)

This course emphasizes the active exploration of dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures. Students will construct, discuss, perform, and analyse drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.
Dramatic Arts Grade 10 (Open)
ADA 2O0
Recommended preparation: ADA 1O0
This course expands and develops skills for ADA2A0 with special attention given to the art of storytelling (alone and in groups, on stage and in film) and the development of improvisational skills. Students will explore play-making through the use of a variety of materials, design and use masks, lighting designs, costumes, sets and props, while recording their experiences in a journal. There will be performance opportunities for varied audiences. Evaluation is based on participation and performance, which is given more weight than in previous courses. This course will involve some outside-of-class rehearsal time. A final presentation will be the final assessment for the course.
Dramatic Arts Grade 11 (U/C)
ADA 3M0
This course requires students to put together and perform dramatic presentations that deal with a variety of issues from the past and present. Students will analyze, interpret, and perform works of drama from various cultures, including Western plays. Students will also do research on different acting styles and conventions for their presentations, create original works, and analyze the functions of playwright, director, actor, technician, and audience.
Dramatic Arts Grade 12 (U/C)
ADA 4M0
Prerequisites: Grade 11 Dramatic Arts (U/C or Open)
This course requires students to experiment with forms and conventions in dramatic literature, and to create/adapt and present dramatic works. Students will do research on dramatic forms, conventions, themes, and theories of acting and directing from the modern era, and apply their knowledge of these in analysing and interpreting dramatic literature, including Canadian works and works from various cultures in the late twentieth century. They will have hands-on experience with various aspects of drama productions.
NOTE: There is an activity fee of $20 for play performances and workshops.
